Basketball – Recreational and Competitive

Niwot Youth Sports basketball programs are divided between a Recreational Program and a Competitive Program. Both programs are for boys and girls. The Recreational Program is for players in grades K through 8 and offers an opportunity to learn the game of basketball in a fun and positive environment that promotes the principals of good sportsmanship, team work, and respect. The Competitive Program is for the more serious players in grades 5 through 8 who are interested in playing in leagues that travel to other gyms in the northern front range.

NOTE:  Regular registration opens 10/14.  Late registration is from 11/17 through 12/1 and a $10 late registration fee will apply.  No registrations will be accepted after 12/1.  Practices will begin the week of 12/2.
Niwot Youth Sports will do all that it can to form teams according to your coach and friend requests. However we only allow 10 players per team, so the earlier you register the more chance you have of being on that team. Your registration is not complete until the registration fee is paid either online or by check.

Competitive Basketball Feeder Program

Niwot Youth Sports, Inc. is partnering with Niwot High School (NHS) to enhance and improve our competitive feeder basketball program. Our feeder program is for players in 5th – 8th grade who are interested in someday playing at Niwot High School. Starting in 2013, we will begin working closely with NHS Coach Enoch Miller, the new boy’s basketball head coach. He plans to work with our coaches, attend the tryouts, and has committed to getting us some court time at the high school.

Competitive can be a scary word for some, because you think the commitment is too large for your busy schedules; it admittedly does involve some travel for games. The teams will practice a bit longer, work a bit harder, and develop their skills faster; but the commitment is not yearlong and does not take too much of your time. The competition only helps to make the players/teams better. Competitive teams play two seasons; the fall season in October through November and the winter season, which runs January through February.

Many of us at NYS have had a chance to watch some of our younger recreation teams over the years, and noticed that a lot of the players are very capable of moving up to the competitive side. These players could and should begin to develop their skills at a higher level to give them a better chance to feed into high school basketball.

Teams will practice 2 or 3 days a week at either Sunset Middle School, or Niwot High School. League games are played on Sunday – usually two games each day. Teams will also participate in a couple of tournaments, including the Niwot High Roundball Tournament, usually held each year in early December.

We are returning to Gold Crown after spending two years in another league. Gold Crown will give us the best chance to develop players the right way and they have made some changes to their program that makes it more attractive for us to return.
